The Christmas markets are now well underway, and whilst they are all usually nice, they can be a little “samey”. However, the town of Traben Trabach which straddles both sides of the Mosel offers something completely different by having their markets underground.
Now in its eighth year, the “Mosel-Wein-Nachts-Markt” this famous market really is special as it takes place in the huge historic wine cellars that lie beneath the town’s streets.
These impressive vaulted spaces are specially decked out with stalls offering a huge variety of traditional crafts, edible treats and of course local plonk. Best of all, being inside, you don’t have to worry about needing a rain coat or brolly!
Above ground, there’s an ice rink which, along with other locations around the town, hosts an extensive entertainment programme.
Opening times for the cellars are as follows:
- To 16th December 2018 – Friday through Sunday inclusive from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
- 20th to 30th December 2018 (excluding 24th & 25th) and 1st January 2019 – daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
- 31st December 2018 – 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
As is common across Germany, everything is closed on 24th and 25th December.
Traben-Trabach is very accessible, being located equidistant between Koblenz and Trier. A shuttle bus service is available from some of the other towns in the locality, and cheap flights are available from various European cities to Frankfurt Hahn regional airport which is only about 40 minutes away, so why not spend a weekend here and experience the real German Christmas spirit?
